The Sonics Legends Fund was created to assist former players in need of financial assistance, connecting them with caring support and critical resources like medical care and housing.

The Sonics Legends Fund has its roots in a similar fund for former Seattle Seahawks players. The creation of the fund was initiated by Sandy Gregory, now a Sonics Legends Fund advisor. Sandy was with the Seahawks for over 40 years. She suggested one day that portions of the money collected from Seahawks players’ fines could benefit former players in need of medical care and other assistance.

Sandy and Sonics legend Gus Williams have been friends since Sandy’s early days working in the USC Sports Information Office, where she got to know Gus, then a freshman on the basketball team. When she learned about Gus’ medical issues in February 2020 and his need for care, Sandy began providing personal assistance, drawing on her experience supporting former professional athletes.

However, it was when fellow Sonics legend Slick Watts suffered a stroke that the need for a more comprehensive support system became increasingly apparent. With two former players facing significant health challenges, Sandy recognized a familiar situation from her time with the Seahawks, when former players experienced serious medical issues without adequate insurance or financial resources.

Recognizing that these beloved athletes, who had contributed so much to the Seattle community, deserved continued care and support, Sandy helped bring the idea of the Sonics Legends Fund to life. What began as individual efforts to assist former players evolved into a broader initiative dedicated to ensuring that Sonics Legends have access to essential resources and support during times of need.
